The commune of Barano it has a population of around 8500 inhabitants and a surface of around 12 Kmqs.
It occupies the part Southwest of the island and it is constituted by different agglomerations ancient places on delicious hills. The fractions have history and autonomous traditions.
The population, of origin farmer, purely had necessity to create nucleuses that were distant from the center to be more next to the grounds to be cultivated. They formed, so, the villages of Piedimonte with the regions of Matarace and Molara, of Fiaiano, Testaccio with the regions of Chiummano, Piano and Vatoliere, of Buonopane and of the Schiappone with St. Pancrazio. It is a typical commune of hill that still preserves rural characteristics. The entry in the commune is marked from the ancient aqueduct called of the Pillars (1470). to signal the Tower of the Saracens to Testaccio, the mills to wind of Montebarano, the front doors put to the entry of some estates of notable of the past, the hundred wine cellars dug in the tufo (to preserve the wine) and the pits of the snow (to preserve the ice for the summer).

In Barano there is the summary of all the forms of erosion that exists in Italy.
